Big 5 Safari’s in Manyoni Private Game Reserve

Every day at Leopard Mountain begins and ends in the bush. Morning drives depart at first light, when the cool air sharpens the senses and the Big 5 are at their most active. Afternoon drives follow the golden hour into sundowner time, a drink in the bush as the light fades over the reserve.

All drives are guided by experienced rangers in open vehicles, carrying a maximum of six to seven guests per vehicle. Small groups mean quieter sightings, longer stops, and the kind of unhurried conversation with your guide that a full vehicle never allows.

RHINO HORN TRIMMING

Rhino horn trimming is one of the most effective tools in the fight against poaching, and one of the most extraordinary things a guest can witness on safari. In Manyoni, our wildlife team carries out regular trimming operations as part of an active protection programme for both black and white rhinos.

Guests join the team in the field: watching the darting, the sampling, and the careful trimming process up close. It is an observational experience, with the possibility, not the guarantee, of being invited to assist the conservation team directly.

PANGOLIN TRACKING IN KWA-ZULU NATAL

Pangolins are the world’s most trafficked mammals. In Manyoni, in partnership with the Zululand Conservation Trust, rescued Temminck’s ground pangolins are released and monitored as part of an active rehabilitation programme. Guests can join the Wildlife Management Team on a morning monitoring session, following tracks, observing behaviour, and learning about the conservation challenges these animals face.

WILDLIFE TELEMETRY TRACKING

Join the Manyoni monitor team in wildlife tracking using telemetry equipment to follow one of the reserve’s collared priority species. Under the guidance of experienced monitors, guests learn to read the landscape, interpret animal behaviour, and understand the data collection that drives wildlife management in the reserve.

This is both an observational and hands-on experience, and one of the clearest windows into how a working private game reserve is managed day to day.

VISIT ZULULAND RHINO ORPHANAGE

The Zululand Rhino Orphanage is the only specialised rehabilitation facility in Zululand dedicated to the care of rhino calves orphaned by poaching. Leopard Mountain supports the orphanage directly and facilitates guest visits as part of the lodge’s conservation programme.

Visits are timed around the calves’ feeding schedule and are purely observational. It offers a rare and humbling perspective on the rhino poaching crisis, the same wildlife you encounter on a safari seen through an entirely different lens.

ZULU CULTURAL TOURS AT LEOPARD MOUNTAIN

Manyoni Private Game Reserve borders several Zulu communities whose daily lives are closely intertwined with the reserve and its conservation work. A cultural tour from Leopard Mountain visits one of these boundary communities, offering guests a genuine, unhurried morning in a Zulu village: everyday life, community projects, the stories behind the landscape.

These tours are facilitated through the Zululand Conservation Trust‘s community outreach programme and are available by request.

SPA

The lodge spa uses Africology products, a South African range built on natural, plant-based and eco-certified ingredients. Treatments include aromatic and deep-tissue massage, skin therapies, facials, and signature rituals designed for the demands of a safari stay.

The spa is open daily (approximately 8am–4pm, varying seasonally) and treatments are available to all guests. Let us pamper you and leave you feeling refreshed and renewed.
