Navigating SA December 2016

12/15/16

For outsiders S.A’s slang can be a cultural overload and even more so, confusing! We literally have a slang word for everything! We have compiled a list of some of the common words that you may hear on your travels so you can not only understand the convo but maybe join in on it as well!

  • Bangbroek - "scaredy-pants"
  • biltong  – dried meat, similar to jerky but way better (a mainstream word), the process of making biltong differs somewhat.
  • Boerewors roll/boerie roll – the South African version of the hot dog, using the boerewors (a minced meat sausage with herbs and spices) with an onion relish in a hot dog bun. Deeelicious!
  • Boet – Male Friend
  • Cheers – A toast. Also used as a goodbye greeting: "See you later buddy, cheers."
  • chop-chop –  means "quickly". Is used when a person has had something done, or wants to have something done in a short amount of time.

Allow yourself an indulgent pampering while you unwind in the tranquil setting that is Leopard Mountain Lodge.
